SISTER CONCERN: SOCIAL WORKS

Project name: BCI Program on STI/HIV/AIDS in Central Region

Project period: March 2002-March 2004-preveious project Oct 1994 to 14 March 2002

Geographic area:

Nine district of Central region- 450 KM highway (Dhanding, Chitwan, Makwanpur, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari and Dhanusa).

Target group: FSWs and their clients

Goal:

Reduce high-risk behaviors and increase STI service utilization among the target populations i.e. FSWs and their clients.

Strategies:

GWP will network and coordinate with the government institutions, NGOs, CBOs and grassroots level organizations and developing networks and build its own capacity in all level as well. For this purpose, BCI program of GWP focused on;

  • Scale up outreach activities in a project districts by mobilizing outreach educators and trained peer communicators rightly from the target group to increase in knowledge and skills for safer sex practices and consistent condom use among the FSWs and their clients.

  • Promote STI services provided by AMDA/STI project for regular check-up and treatment of most at risk populations.

  • Initiate outreach support to a small numbers of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) through existing BCI program.

  • Activities/Interventions:

  • Community assessments

  • One-on one outreach/educational contacts activities with high risk behaving group like FSWs and their clients

  • STI case referral and management

  • Condom promotional activities among the high-risk behaving population

  • Training/orientation to target audience

  • Group discussion and interaction

  • Peer education training and peer educator mobilization

  • Drop in Center based information and communication for the targeted population

  • Care and counseling for People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their care givers and family members

  • School education

  • Street drama, film show

  • Condom/AIDS day celebration/observation

  • Advocacy meeting with district level concerned stakeholders

  • Coordination/networking among with others organization against HIV/AIDS

  • Support DACC

  • Distribution of IEC/BCC materials

Major accomplishments

  • Changes in risk behaviors of target populations as they found practicing safer sexual behaviors by using condom during casual sex encounters (BSS fourth round data-2001 refers that Consistent condom among the clients of FSWs Male Labors: 45 % (it was 23% in 1999) Clients of FSWs-Transport workers 60% (which was 36 % in 1999)

  • Condom carrying behaviors is increased by 100% as compare to 1998 situation. At that time around 28 % FSWs used to carry condom during their mobility but it was found that about 55 % of FSWs now carry the condom as of BSS 2001. Similarly, clients are also habituated to carry and buy the condom.

  • Increased on treatment seeking behaviors of STI the target population's knowledge on STI/HIV/AIDS and condom use is increased so far

This NGO has considerable experience on highway base HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and control. Outreach is the most successive component during its BCI campaign. Local support and through support of the concerned GO/NGO/CBOs are the most essential part for the successful program intervention.
