Chepang Ethnic Group (Praja)

The indigenous group of the Chepang live in the central hills of Nepal. Until recently, they were a nomadic hunter-gatherer tribe, but are now dependent on agriculture and sell various forest products such as herbs. A co-operative was formed in March 1999, based two hours walk from the nearest small town. The aim is to provide a sustainable source of income to the Chepang from producing and marketing non-timber forest products. This provides an important opportunity for them to generate income as well as preserve the environment. Now they sell herbal teas to alternative trade organizations in Germany and herbs to the local market. They also sell traditional ayurvedic herbs to The Body Shop for their Ayurveda range of products. A local NGO, who is facilitating the relationship between The Body Shoo and the co-operative, provides support in marketing and exporting as well as community development.

General Travel is working to develop the Chepang area as  an alternative tourism destination while being actively involved  in their social development through our local NGO (GWP).
